Josie Van Der Wal
Clinical Counsellor | Play Therapist
Personal Biography
Josie is a Clinical Counsellor and Play Therapist with a passion for supporting children, young people and families through play, creativity and connection. She has extensive experience working across therapeutic, disability and family support settings, and values creating spaces where children can explore, communicate and make sense of their experiences in ways that feel natural and developmentally appropriate to them.
Josie’s practice is grounded in a humanistic, child-centred, trauma-informed and neuro-affirming approach. She places a strong emphasis on attunement, emotional safety and building a trusting therapeutic relationship in which children can feel accepted and understood. She draws on Child-Centred Play Therapy, creative and expressive therapies, attachment-informed practice, family systems and developmental approaches to provide therapy that is responsive to each child’s individual needs. She believes that when children feel safe, connected and genuinely understood, play can provide a powerful way for them to explore their experiences, build confidence and strengthen their capacity to manage big feelings and challenges.
Josie is also an Advanced NDIS Behaviour Support Practitioner, with extensive experience in complex behaviour assessment, behaviour support planning, emotional regulation support and working collaboratively with families, schools and broader support teams. This background informs her therapeutic work by supporting a holistic understanding of behaviour within the context of a child’s development, relationships, environment and individual needs.
Josie places a strong emphasis on working alongside parents and caregivers. She aims to support families to better understand what may sit underneath a child’s behaviour, strengthen connection and develop practical strategies that support emotional wellbeing across everyday life.
